Chemical Testing of Toys
The JS Hamilton laboratory offers a wide range of testing services for toys and products intended for children and infants. We perform accredited toy safety tests to ensure compliance with standards aligned with Directive 2009/48/EC (Toy Safety Directive) and the following standards:
TOY SAFETY
PN-EN 71-3+A1
Part 3: Migration of specific elements:
Aluminium, antimony, arsenic, barium, boron, cadmium, chromium (III), chromium (VI), cobalt, copper, lead, manganese, mercury, nickel, selenium, strontium, tin, migration of organotin in simulated gastric juice, zinc.
PN-EN 71-8:2012
Part 8: Activity toys intended for domestic use.
PN-EN 71-9, 10, and 11
Parts 9, 10, 11: Organic chemicals, including:
Flame retardants, dyes, primary aromatic amines, monomers, solvents – migration, solvents – inhalation, preservatives, wood preservatives, plasticizers.
MARKING OF HAZARDOUS SUBSTANCES
Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006 (REACH) – Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals:
Phthalates, primary aromatic amines, AZO dyes, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs).
PAHs
Since 1 July 2020, new PAH requirements apply (AfPS GS 2019:01 PAK), replacing the 2014 specification.
The purpose of the updated guidance is to address risks associated with products that may contain PAHs. Correct selection and evaluation of materials for testing, based on chemical content, is essential.
The laboratory’s role includes identifying suitable materials or product components for testing. PAH content according to AfPS GS 2019:01 PAK is a fundamental criterion in chemical testing during certification processes.
ROHS
Directive 2011/65/EU of the European Parliament and Council on the restriction of the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment (RoHS):
Mercury, lead, cadmium, chromium (VI), polybrominated biphenyls (PBB), and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE).
