Testing sun protection products

Before a manufacturer places a sun protection product on the market, it is required to perform the necessary analyses to confirm the product’s protective role against ultraviolet (UVB and UVA) radiation.

Determination of UVB Protection (SPF): SPF measurement is based on comparing the minimal erythema dose (MED) for skin protected with the product to the MED for unprotected skin.

Determination of UVA Protection (UVA-PF): The level of UVA protection is determined using an in vitro method with specialized equipment and PMMA plates.

After UV exposure, phototoxicity and photoallergy assessments are conducted to rule out the possibility of allergic or toxic reactions.

The laboratory provides the following services for sun protection products:

  • Determination of SPF protection using in vivo methods
  • Determination of SPF protection using in vitro methods
  • Determination of UVA protection using in vitro methods
  • Determination of UVA protection using in vivo methods
